Tiramisu: A Classic Italian Dessert

Tiramisu was the very first dessert I learned to make as a teenager. This classic Italian treat has remained close to my heart ever since. Loved by children and adults alike, tiramisu is a symbol of Italian culinary tradition. In this piece, I’d like to share with you the authentic recipe for the traditional version of tiramisu. Although many variations and flavors have emerged over the years—some with fruit, others with liqueurs or chocolate spreads. I still prefer the original, classic recipe.

A Little Bit of History

Tiramisu is one of the most famous Italian desserts, recognized and enjoyed all over the world. The word Tiramisu derived from the Venetian dialect phrase “tirame su,” which means “pick me up” or “lift me up.” Several regions in Italy claim its invention, including Veneto, Piedmont, and Friuli Venezia Giulia.

One of the most fascinating origin stories suggests that this treat was created in Treviso in the 18th century by a mistress who offered it to her clients, claiming it would rejuvenate them and help them fulfill their marital duties. Because of these somewhat scandalous origins, tiramisu didn’t appear in any official cookbooks until the 1980s, when the stigma surrounding its story began to fade.

The restaurant Le Beccherie in Treviso claims that the dessert was invented there by Alba Campeol and her pastry chef, Roberto “Loli” Linguanotto. They also claim to be the first to serve tiramisu on a restaurant menu.

Tiramisu Today

Today, countless recipes exist. While the traditional version remains my favorite, modern adaptations include ingredients such as strawberries, lemon (for a more refreshing twist), or even Nutella. The classic recipe uses savoiardi (ladyfingers), but some versions substitute them with Pavesini or pan di Spagna (sponge cake).

As for the soaking liquid, this traditional treat calls for strong coffee, but others add a splash of liqueur, like Marsala or coffee-flavored spirits, to enhance the flavor.

Try making this dessert yourself and discover which version becomes your favorite!
