Tramezzini Sandwiches: A Classic Italian Finger Food
Tramezzini sandwiches are a beloved Italian snack that combines simplicity, taste, and tradition. These small, crustless sandwiches are typically served in triangular shapes. They are incredibly popular across Italy, especially as finger food for parties, picnics, or casual get-togethers. They are easy to prepare and can be filled with a variety of delicious ingredients to suit all tastes and occasions.
I often prepare tramezzini for birthday celebrations, especially for my teenage daughter and her friends (they absolutely love them). These snacks are also a hit when I host gatherings with adult friends. Served alongside a glass of red wine or a chilled beer, they make the perfect savory companion for a relaxed evening.
A little bit of History
The word “Tramezzini” literally means “in between,” referring to their original purpose as a light snack eaten between meals. They were first created around 1925 at the Caffè Mulassano in Turin. The idea was to offer customers a small, quick bite during the afternoon. Over the years, these sandwiches became a staple of Italian snacking culture.
How to make Tramezzini
Tramezzini are traditionally made with soft, white, crustless bread. If you don’t have the special tramezzini bread at home, you can easily use regular sliced white bread ( just trim off the crusts before assembling). While triangles are the most common shape, some people prefer to cut them into rectangles or even roll them into pinwheels for a more creative presentation.
One essential ingredient that ties everything together is mayonnaise. This creamy spread adds moisture and richness, making the sandwiches truly irresistible. There are many types of mayonnaise available today, including lighter or flavored versions, so you can choose according to your preference. I usually stick with either the classic or low-fat variety.
Popular tramezzini fillings include:
- Tuna with sliced boiled eggs
- Ham with mushrooms (a personal favorite—see recipe below)
- Tuna with sliced green or black olives
- Shrimp with boiled eggs (my daughter’s top pick)
- Smoked salmon with tomato slices and fresh lettuce
No matter the filling, tramezzini sandwiches are always a crowd-pleaser. They’re versatile, elegant, and authentically Italian.
